National Day Chess Competition and Board Game Weekend

IMG_6697THE Times Square Shopping Centre’s (Times Square) Board Games Weekend officially came to a close with the prize presentation ceremony for the winners of the National Day Chess Competition.

Present to officiate at the ceremony was the guest of honour, Permanent Secretary at Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Paduka Dr Hj Affendy Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Hj Abidin. Also present was the President of the Brunei Chess Federation (BCF), Hj Zainal Abidin Hj Md Ali.

The three-day fun weekend was organised in conjunction with the 32nd National Day celebration. During the course of the weekend, the shopping centre invited members of the public to compete and have fun playing various board games such as Scrabble, Monopoly and Jenga.

The weekend also included the National Day Chess Competition, a collaboration between Times Square with BCF and the Department of Co-curriculum Education.

IMG_6899The National Day Chess Competition was divided into three categories: the Rapid category, which was participated by a total of 63 contestants; the Blitz category, which had 19 contestants; and the Interschool Blitz category, which saw 110 students putting their skills to the test,

Some of the winners of the day included Eko Handoko, the champion of the Adults National Day Blitz category; ad Voon Choon Leong, who was named the champion for the above 50 years old National day Blitz category. Other big winners included the team from St John’s School, Kuala Belait which received the Best School Award for an amazing performance.

Winners were presented with their prizes, which consisted of cash prizes, medals and trophies by the guest of honour who was accompanied by the BCF president.

“This year’s Board Games Weekend saw more participants than the previous year. We hope the turnout will be greater for the next one we have planned which will take place in July.IMG_6706

“There will be more games for members of the public to try their hands at,” shared Times Square’s Marketing Manager Lim Yee Liang.

He added that the next upcoming event will be Japanese Language and Culture week, which will take place on March 18 to March 2016.
